Follow these tips, and then call ServiceMaster Clean of Southeast South Dakota for professional carpet cleaning.

Here in Yankton and the Southeast South Dakota area, we live pretty active lives. We love the outdoors, being with friends, and enjoying our families. That’s all good, except when they mix with your carpeting and leave a carpet stain! Whether it’s tracking in something from outside, a pet accident, over active children, or a food or drink spill, carpet stains happen. When it does, there are some things you need to know.

First and foremost, do not wait to get after the stain! The sooner you handle a carpet stain, the less the damage. But there are so many kinds of stains. Different stains may require different action. Here are a few tips to help you not make that temporary stain a forever stain.

Rule number one: NEVER scrub. Always blot, no matter what the stain. Scrubbing vigorously may seem like the thing to do, but it actually forces the stain deeper into the carpet’s fibers and makes it larger! Also, always blot the stain from the outside in to prevent further spreading.

But what about specific type of stains? Here are some general guidelines to get you started:

Water soluble stains
Water soluble stains are made from substances that are water soluble. It’s a bigger list than you may think and includes berries, colas, alcoholic beverages, gravy, ice cream, mud, pet accidents, and even wet latex paint. For carpet stains like these, gently scoop-up any solids or thick liquids, remembering to scoop toward the center of the spill.

Now you’re ready to get to work on the stain or spill. Mix up a solution of ¼ teaspoon of mild detergent or white vinegar in a quart of water. Use it to irrigate the area and then blot it out with a clean towel. Repeat this until the stain is removed to your satisfaction. Rinse with clear water and blot until as dry as possible. It may be helpful to place folded absorbent towel down and put a heavy weight on it like a stack of books. This will help wick away the rinse water.

Tougher water soluble materials
Some things are especially difficult to remove like blood, chocolate, coffee, or vomit (common if you have a cat). These messes should be cleaned with one tablespoon of ammonia per cup of water. Follow the same procedure as listed above. An important note is DO NOT use this solution on wool carpets. It can damage the fiber.

Fats, oils and wax
These carpet stains seem to scare people the most. Don’t panic. Simply cover the area with a layer of paper towels and apply a warm iron to the paper towels. This will cause the offending material to stick to the paper towel for removal. Just be sure not to use a iron that is too hot because it will melt synthetic carpet and ruin it.

These are just a few tips to help you get a head start on carpet stains. They may not always be a complete solution, but for carpet stain first aid they can help. For more serious carpet staining it’s best to call a professional trained in cleaning carpets and stain removal who knows how to deal with all types of carpeting.
