The History and Development of Professional Carpet Cleaning in Yankton, SD

March 9th, 2017 · No Comments

As carpets have grown in popularity over the last centuries, the methods used to clean this interior design choice developed alongside the carpets themselves. Today, even home vacuums boast advanced sensors and dirt removal abilities. Professional carpet cleaners have access to state-of-the-art cleaning equipment and environmentally friendly solutions. At ServiceMaster Clean of Southeast South Dakota, we respect the evolution of carpet cleaning and the history that brought us the technology we use today to offer our customers comprehensive, expert carpet cleaning in Yankton, SD.

The history of carpet fashions goes hand-in-hand with the path of how carpet cleaning methods developed. Because carpeting has been consistently popular since the early 1800s (excepting for a lull during the 1920s-30s), cleaning has been a constant necessity for any business or homeowners who chose to decorate with carpets.

1800s and earlier: Before carpets were frequently cleaned, home and business owners used large cloths called druggets to cover the traffic-heavy areas on their carpets. While druggets were effective in keeping stains and dirt off the majority of the carpeting, they weren’t perfect solutions as they tended to clash with the cosmetic appearance of the carpet design. Other carpet cleaning methods included beating and sweeping.

Mid-1800s: Around 1830, housewives began to develop their own mixtures of floor cleaning solutions. These cleaning solutions took off, and today’s major cleaning brands can trace their roots to homegrown mixes brewed during this time period.

1860-70: During this decade, the first hand-operated vacuum cleaner came to carpet cleaning markets. Ives W. McGaffey created the “Whirlwind” cleaner in 1868. Though compact and light, the Whirlwind was awkward and hard to use. Once the design of the Whirlwind was released, others began improving carpet cleaning vacuums over the next 30 years.

1900s: In 1900, Corrine Dufour introduced the first electrical sweeper for carpets. Just a year later, Hubert Cecil Booth created the first vacuum powered by an electric motor. Over the next century, different aspects of what is now found in today’s average vacuum cleaner were developed and improved at varying rates.

Thanks to the hardworking people in the cleaning industry and the innovative inventors over the past 200 years, ServiceMaster Clean of Southeast South Dakota can offer high quality professional carpet cleaning in Yankton, SD, with advanced cleaning equipment and green cleaning solutions.
