In Yankton South Dakota, we know winter! That is, we know what needs to be done to get ready for winter, but sometimes we need a little friendly nudge to get us going. No matter what the weather is like today, you can be sure winter is on its way! ServiceMaster Clean of  SE South Dakota offers some tips and reminders about getting your home ready for the “deep freeze.”

Priority number one should be your furnace. Make sure the filter is clean and a supply on hand to change as directed. If it’s been a while since you’ve had your furnace professionally checked, don’t wait until it’s 10 degrees to have it serviced. A well maintained furnace runs more efficiently and keeps heating bills down. If your furnace has a humidifier, make sure it’s working and the water supply line is clear. To ensure your family is safe, check the batteries in your carbon monoxide detectors. If your home is not equipped with one, now is the time to purchase and install it.

Priority number two is keeping the cold out and the heat in. Drafts around doors and windows are uncomfortable and cause furnaces to work overtime. Check the weather stripping around doors. If you can see any light between the door and the frame, you need to replace the weather strip. The same goes for windows. More cold can come in around windows than through the glass. Caulk around doors and windows if needed. Replace cracked window panes and make sure all storm windows fit securely. Regardless of the age of your home, applying clear plastic over the windows can go a long way in keeping your house warm.

Something you may not think about is the direction of ceiling fans. If the fan is equipped with a switch to change the direction of the blade’s rotation it should be set to rotate clockwise in the winter. This creates an updraft and forces the warmer air near the ceiling to circulate evenly throughout the room.

Needless to say, if your home has a wood burning stove or fireplace, make sure the chimney is clean. Over time, soot, creosote and other deposits build up inside the chimney and can catch fire. Burning soft woods like pine or other woods with heavy sap content can cause a rapid buildup of deposits. Nothing is worth risking a chimney fire.

It’s important to take care of the outside of the house too. Cleaning the gutters of fall debris is a good place to start. Clogged gutters and downspouts can cause thawing snow and ice to backup forming ice dams and structural damage. If ice dams are a problem, check to be sure you have adequate attic insulation and proper soffit and roof ventilation. If you haven’t done so, make sure insulation is not blocking air-flow from the attic to the soffits. And don’t forget to drain outdoor faucets. It’s also a good idea to ensure cold air can’t enter the house around a faucet pipe and potentially cause it to freeze and burst. A little care can avoid a  ruptured pipe and a huge mess.

When was the last time your air ducts were cleaned? Have they ever been cleaned? Air ducts can fill with dust, debris and lots of other stuff. As they clog they significantly reduce air flow, circulate dust, mold, and other nasty airborne debris throughout the house, and greatly reduce the efficiency of your furnace. This is the perfect time to have them cleaned to provide optimal flow of healthier indoor air.

It may sound like a lot to do, but if you start early you can be ready for winter before the first hard freeze hits or snow begins to accumulate. But if something unexpected happens like a burst pipe, soot and smoke from an uncooperative fireplace, a dripping mess in the ceiling and walls from ice dams, or you just want your carpets cleaned before winter sets in, contact ServiceMaster Clean of Southeast South Dakota.
